First, I would suggest you to create a System Restore Point manually, so that in case, something goes wrong while performing these steps, you may always perform a System Restore.

Also you may try to update the sound drivers on your computer and check if it helps. Access the link below and follow the steps to update drivers. Also you may try to boot both the computer in safe mode and check for the shutdown issue. To boot to the desktop in safe mode keep tapping F8 key during restart.

Once you see the option to boot in safe mode with networking select it and press enter. If the shutdown works fine in safe mode, you may put the computer in a clean boot state and check if it helps.

Access the link below and follow the steps to troubleshoot a problem by performing a clean boot in Windows Vista or in Windows 7. If your issue is resolved after performing Clean Boot and then installing the updates, then follow the steps mentioned in the following KB article to narrow down the exact source.

Let us know if this helps. Does the issue persist in Safe Mode? Do you have any peripheral hardware connected to the computer?

If so, try disconnecting the hardware. Check to see if your computer shows any performance issues. No other third party programs are running. All the updates have been done from Windows Update and the problem still persists.

The system is not properly shutting down and I have to manually power it off.
